EMINENT HOMOEOPATHS

Samuel HAHNEMANN, MD
(1755-1843)

The Life and Letters of Dr Samuel Hahnemann
Samuel Hahnemann is the founder of homoeopathy. This outstanding scholar was born on April 10th, 1755, in Meissen, Germany. Hahnemann mainly conducted his studies in Leipzig and Vienna. Hahnemann had twelve children, one of whom he and his second wife adopted. He was credited with rediscovering the Law of Similars, in 1790. His motto "Let similars cure similars" grew in popularity. Also, in Hahnemann's lifetime, he and his proving group tested or proved over 100 new remedies. Hahnemann provided a base for homoeopathy and a wealth of knowledge through accurate documentation of provings. Hahnemann died on July 2nd, 1843, in Paris, France.

Dr. Clemens Von Boenninghausen, MD
(1785 - 1864)
Dr. Clemens Von Boenninghausen, MD
Dr. Boenninghausen was born to one of the oldest noble families of Westphalia, Germany. His full name was Clemens Maria Franz Baron Von Boenninghausen. He was Baron by inheritance, a lawyer by profession, and an agriculturist by natural inclination. As a Doctor of Law, Dr. Boenninghausen practiced as a lawyer for some time and later became a judge. Because of his interest in horticulture, he was made Director of Botanical Gardens at Munster. Here, he came to be known as the "Sage of Munster." It was in 1827 that he developed purulent tuberculosis.

When he did not find any relief from the best orthodox treatment, and the physicians gave no hope of his recovery, he wrote a letter to his friend, Dr. A. Weihe, expressing his hopelessness for life and bidding him his last goodbye. Dr. A. Weihe was a homoeopath and asked Boenninghausen to try homoeopathic treatment. Fortunately for Boenninghausen and for homoeopathy, Dr. Weihe cured him.

Being greatly impressed with his treatment Boenninghausen took deep interest in studying homoeopathy and devoted his remaining years to the cause of homoeopathy.

Constantine Hering
(1800 - 1880)

Constantine Hering
Although of German descent, Hering is known as the "Father" of American homeopathy. Before emigrating to America, he had studied the writings of Hahnemann in order to "disprove" the legitimacy of homeopathy. Hering is the author of the popular classic: The Guiding Symptoms of our Materia Medica.
"With every breath I take I cherish the memory of my fatherland. Never have I forgotten it, for a moment. No one knows what he loses when he leaves the land of his birth, a stranger in a strange land; I bore it all for the sake of homeopathy. This, now, is the country of my children."

Samuel Lilienthal

John Henry Clarke
The 13 remedies of Dr John Henry Clarke

He was a prodigious worker, as his published works testify, to say nothing of the hosts of private patients from all parts of the world.

He was editor of The Homoeopathic World for altogether twenty-nine years.

He was indeed an outstanding character, and if one can compare him with another, it is with him who was probably the greatest homoeopath that the United States has produced Dr. James Tyler Kent.

And each gave to the world of Homeopathy the greatest and most valuable book that their respective countries have produced, indeed, in our opinion, the two most indispensable works written since the days of Hahnemann - the Dictionary of Materia Medica and the Repertory of Materia Medica.

He settled in Parkersburg, W. Va., in 1888 where a long and very large practise was his, patients consulting him from neighboring states and from distant states and countries.

His ambition was to devote all his time to teaching and writing but he never reached the point of giving up his practise. However, he frequently lectured before scientific audiences at the Pulte Medical College in Cincinnati and was a teacher of philosophy, materia medica, and repertory study in the American Foundation for Homoeopathy Postgraduate School from 1924 until his death.

Boger, who was a german scholar, brought Bœnninghausen's Characteristics and Repertory into the English Language in 1905.

Lectures on Homeoeopathic Materia Medica

Kent is said to have contributed as much to the great homeopathic works as Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy.

Prior to his involvement with homeopathy,
Kent had practiced conventional medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He discovered and "converted" to homeopathy as a result of his wife's recovery from a serious ailment using homeopathic methods.

One of his greatest contributions to the profession of homeopathy, and its teachings, was his completely unique style of repertory. Although others exist, Kent's famous repertory, The Great Repertory, is still the popular choice, and has been described as more complete, systematic and precise — with more well-described symptoms.
